An epidemiological concept referring to a factor which modifies the magnitude of an effect of a primary exposure. Effect modifiers for radiation-induced cancers include sex, age at exposure and smoking. Unlike confounding, effect modification is a biological phenomenon in which the exposure has a different impact in different circumstances.
