A spectrum of responses involving deterministic haematopoietic, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and central nervous system reactions to a large radiation dose received acutely or subacutely to all or most of the body. It follows a dose-dependent clinical course divided into prodromal, latent, and manifest periods of illness.
