An error-prone DNA double strand break repair pathway that is exclusively activated in the G1 cell cycle phase and to a varying extent in S and G2 phases of the cell cycle.

NHEJ repair takes place in non-cycling cells and variously in all cycle phases, and is dependent on the repair proteins Ku70, Ku80, and DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs).
