Cells with an unlimited proliferative capacity, capable of self-renewal and differentiation to produce all types of cells in a lineage system. Stem cells are described as totipotent (producing all lineages), whereas their daughter progenitor cells can be pluripotent (producing many lineages), multipotent (producing several lineages), or unipotent (one lineage).
