The state in which society ‘keeps a watchful eye’ on authorised activity to ensure that plans and decisions are implemented and working properly. It is an important aspect of how the radiological protection system is applied over long periods. Where very long timescales are involved, e.g. disposal of long-lived radioactive waste, oversight includes preservation of societal records and societal memory of the presence of the facility over time.
