The mean absorbed dose in a specified organ or tissue region <math>r_T</math> is given by:

where <math>m_T</math> is the mass of the organ or tissue and <math>D</math> is the absorbed dose in the mass element <math>dm</math>. The SI unit of mean absorbed dose is joule per kilogramme (J kg<sup>-1</sup>) and its special name is [[gray]] (Gy). The mean absorbed dose in an organ is sometimes termed organ dose.
