MDCT systems are CT scanners with a detector array consisting of more than a single row of detectors. The ‘multi-detector-row’ configuration of MDCT scanners refers to the use of multiple detector arrays (rows) in the longitudinal direction (i.e. along the length of the patient). MDCT scanners use a slip-ring gantry allowing helical acquisition while moving the patient. MDCT should be distinguished from digital flat-panel detectors typically employed by CBCT scanners as these two different detector technologies have a very distinct acquisition time latency dynamic range and spatial resolution.
