In alpha decay, the nucleus of an atom of atomic number Z and mass number A emits an alpha particle (4He <sup>4</sup>He nucleus) to form an atom of atomic number Z-2 and mass number A-4. (Adapted from [[ICRP Publication 107]], 2007)
