Radioactive waste that may include high levels of activity concentration of short-lived radionuclides but only relatively low levels of activity concentration of long-lived radionuclides, making it suitable for near surface disposal. Classification of material as LLW and its suitability for a particular disposal facility will need to be demonstrated by a safety case for the facility. (IAEA GSG-1, 2009)
